Congress MP Sita Thapaliya (Urmila) has demanded a response from Prime Minister Balen Shah regarding the self-immolation incident of Ganesh Nepali that occurred in Tripureshwar, Kathmandu on Thursday.

In Friday’s meeting of the House of Representatives, MP Thapaliya stated that the Prime Minister must be held accountable. “Prime Minister, under your rule, will the poor not be allowed to live? When you were mayor, you seized and destroyed the bicycles of the poor. Now, as Prime Minister, you have demolished the homes of squatters but failed to provide any management. Today, you have made it impossible for daily wage earners to survive. Who is this city for?” she asked.

MP Thapaliya also urged to recall the statement made by then-Mayor Shah of Kathmandu Metropolitan City when Prem Acharya self-immolated in front of the New Baneshwar Parliament building in Magh 2079. “I am deeply moved to hear that 25-year-old Ganesh Nepali from Mugu, who was forced to attempt self-immolation in front of the Department of Passports, died during treatment, but Prime Minister, today you remain silent. Yesterday, you were the one asking questions—where are you now and what are you doing?” she asked. “I want to ask you in your own words—Prime Minister, has the state really become so helpless and failed that citizens are forced to set themselves on fire to make their pain heard?”

MP Thapaliya also said that publicity cannot cover up the real situation of the people. She suggested becoming a responsible leader as well. “A government that remains silent on the suffering of its citizens will ultimately stand in the dock of history because of its own silence, and it must stand there. The trust of the people is won not by speeches, but by actions,” she said.
