Rastriya Prajatantra Party parliamentary party leader Gyan Bahadur Shahi has said that when taxes and fines are imposed on the people, their lives are not secure. He also stated that government ministers are not working responsibly.
In Friday’s meeting of the House of Representatives, Shahi criticized the government regarding the self-immolation of Ganesh Nepali from Mugu. He said that problems have arisen because the government does not provide facilities to the people but only collects taxes and fines.
“Looking at the government’s acts, policies, and rules, they seem focused on the well-off. Those who have money in their pockets can live in Nepal, but those without money have no value to their lives—this is the message being sent by the government’s policies and programs,” Shahi said. “Do not make policies and programs that the people cannot bear; make those that the people can bear. Laws that force people to sell their homes to pay state fines will secure neither the state nor the lives of the people.”
Shahi also criticized Home Minister Sudhan Gurung. He accused Home Minister Gurung of focusing more on creating content for social media than on solving the people’s problems. “Is he the Home Minister or a content creator? The Home Minister is always surrounded by media, running here and there like a movie hero—sometimes at the airport, sometimes elsewhere,” Shahi said. “If the real intention was to provide treatment, Ganesh Nepali would not have died today; his life would have been saved. Why do we need to see where the Home Minister went on camera? How much did the Home Minister use YouTube today? How much content did he create on YouTube? That is not important. What matters is whether the Home Minister’s orders saved the lives of the people or not.”
Shahi said that since Balendra Shah became Mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City, the poor have started to suffer in Kathmandu. “Is this Kathmandu city only for millionaires and billionaires? Is this not also a city for the poor, the suffering, and the marginalized?” Shahi said. “If this is the capital of Nepal, it should also be a city for the poor, the suffering, and the proletariat. The poor and suffering people have become unable to live in this city; this situation has arisen because of the previous mayoral term. The government should understand that it exists for the weaker sections,” Shahi urged.
Shahi also said that the state is causing hardship by imposing tax upon tax on the people. “Today, the government has pushed the poor and suffering people into misery by adding tax upon tax. Where is the management for those who make a living by doing business with pushcarts? Where is the parking for those who earn a daily living by running share-riding services like Pathao and taxis?” Shahi said. “I do not believe that people should do business on the streets, but why was no alternative arrangement made for those citizens? They were not provided with organized spaces. This government must answer.”
