Members of the House of Representatives have demanded an impartial investigation from the government regarding Ganesh Nepali’s attempted self-immolation and his subsequent death.
As soon as Friday’s meeting of the House of Representatives began, opposition party lawmakers, including those from the main opposition, stood up in protest. In response, Speaker Dol Prasad Aryal first gave time to lawmaker Basana Thapa to speak. Thapa questioned why the government remained silent regarding the self-immolation attempt by 25-year-old Ganesh Nepali of Mugu on Thursday.
She also stated that simply repainting Sajha’s green buses blue for operation in the Kathmandu Valley would not ensure anyone’s safety, and accused the government of creating an environment where squatters are forced to jump into rivers.
Lawmaker Bhumikha Limbu Subba also stated that Ganesh Nepali attempted self-immolation because he was fined 10,000 rupees for parking a motorcycle, and called it tragic that such an environment had been created. She drew the government’s attention by asking why citizens are being forced to die.
Lawmaker Parvati BK said that citizens like Ganesh Nepali are being forced to burn themselves alive, and demanded compensation for the deceased’s family. Lawmaker Radhika Ramtel also stated that there should be an investigation into the incident involving the deceased Nepali.
Lawmaker Gyan Bahadur Shahi said that the poor and destitute cannot survive in the capital. He stated that facilities and arrangements are only for the privileged. According to Shahi, citizens are forced to pay higher taxes than in Europe but receive services comparable to Somalia.
