Nepali Congress President Gagan Kumar Thapa has objected to the government's attempt to advance the process of constitutional amendment without clear priorities and identification of specific problems.

Speaking at a discussion program on 'Nepali Congress's Perspective on Constitutional Amendment' organized at the party's central office in Sanepa, Lalitpur on Thursday, President Thapa raised questions about the process, procedures, and leadership of the task force formed by the government. He remarked that the issue of amendment was being approached by forgetting the historical background of constitution-making, the pain of the armed conflict, and the achievements gained through the sacrifice of thousands of citizens.

“It is not acceptable to ignore the fact of what kind of political conflict Nepal has gone through to reach this point and how the Constituent Assembly drafted the constitution. Even if we limit the issue of 17–18 thousand people killed to a single line, each deceased has a story and a family's grief attached to it,” he said, “It is concerning to try to abruptly enter into constitutional amendment by forgetting all these matters. If the door to constitutional amendment is opened recklessly, it could undermine the fundamental bases that bind society and geography together and could destabilize the entire governance system. Such risks are evident when the government proceeds without setting priorities.”
