Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) lawmaker Smriti Century has said that the state must take the initiative to break the web of caste-based discrimination present in Nepali society. MP Century also stated that, simply because they are Dalit, people still face problems finding rental rooms even in Kathmandu.
Speaking at Wednesday’s meeting of the House of Representatives, MP Century said that the situation where it is difficult to survive due to being Dalit in society must end. “Even today, for 81 days, the banner at Maitighar Mandala asking ‘Is there a room available, government?’ has been mocking this state and society. If it is difficult for a Dalit to find a room even in a city considered educated and civilized, when will they ever be recognized as human beings in this society?” said MP Century. “The Home Minister visited Maitighar Mandala to show that the government is present, but to break the web of caste-based discrimination, both the doors and the consciousness of Singha Durbar must be opened. From now on, no child in this country should have to hide their caste to survive.”
MP Century also said that the self-respect of citizens should not be allowed to be harmed. She said, “When the country’s borders are encroached upon, the blood of all of us boils, but why do our sensitivities remain silent when the self-respect of our own citizens is trampled? Laws have been made in the country, and the state has expressed its commitment against discrimination, but the mentality of discrimination is still alive in society,” she said.
MP Century said that incidents involving various members of the Dalit community have exposed the extent of caste-based discrimination against Dalits in Nepali society.
