The government has registered a bill in the parliament to revive the previous arrangement of placing the National Investigation Department under the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers.
The then Sushila Karki-led government had amended the Government of Nepal (Division of Work) Regulations on 9 Asoj last year and placed the Investigation Department under the Ministry of Home Affairs.
On 5 Mangshar, a legal arrangement was made to keep the department under the Ministry of Home Affairs by amending the Nepal Special Act through an ordinance. Prime Minister Balendra Shah has returned the National Investigation to the Prime Minister's Office.
On 30 Baisakh, the Government of Nepal (Division of Work) Regulations were amended and the department was brought under the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers. The law was amended through an ordinance and the Investigation Department was sent under the Ministry of Home Affairs, but the Division of Work Regulations have placed the department within the purview of the Prime Minister's Office.

The Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers has stated that the bill was brought to restore the previous arrangement from the date the ordinance brought by the previous government became inoperative as the replacement bill was not presented in Parliament.

Before that, and during the Sushila Karki-led government, the Investigation Department remained under the Ministry of Home Affairs for a few months. Now, it has been brought back under the Prime Minister's Office.
