UML MP Pushparaj Kandel has criticized the government over the Prime Minister's controversial remarks and the arrest of party vice-chairman Bishnu Poudel.
He expressed his objection to Prime Minister Balendra Shah's border-related remarks during the question-and-answer session in Parliament on June 17. Kandel claims that the Prime Minister's statement that Nepal has also encroached on Indian territory in many places is treasonous. Pointing out the danger that the statement could act as evidence against Nepal in future talks between the two countries, he demanded that the Prime Minister apologize and remove the statement from the Parliament's records.
'For the Prime Minister of the country to speak in Parliament about Nepal encroaching on Indian territory on an issue that has not been raised by the concerned parties and has not been discussed anywhere is a sign of a serious conspiracy. Bishnu Poudel is innocent. The government is pretending to arrest high-ranking officials only to hide its weaknesses and show it to the international body (FATF). This is motivated by the malicious intention of defaming the CPN-UML,' he said.
MP Kandel also strongly opposed the arrest of UML Vice-Chairman and former Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Bishnu Poudel on money laundering charges. He described the arrest as political vendetta and a strategy to intimidate the opposition. Kandel also demanded Poudel's immediate release.
MP Kandel also questioned the news that preparations are being made to allow ministers to have up to 9 advisors and private secretaries in the secretariat. 'If this is true, this is the height of policy corruption,' he said. 'On the one hand, the government is giving immunity to the real criminals and on the other hand, leaking information at tax rates to benefit middlemen. He also warned against using the investigative bodies under the Prime Minister's Office as political weapons.
