In the first national convention of the National Independent Party (NISP), 4 women from Karnali Province have become central members. Sita Badi, Binita Kathayat, Tasi Lhajom, Menuka Shahi and Prakash Neupane were elected central members from Karnali in the party elections held on Thursday.

31 candidates from Karnali entered the election fray in the first general convention of the NISP. Although women were previously included only in the quota, the newly elected central member Kathayat said that it was positive that women came forward in the competition this time. She said that the party's election showed women's unity. 'It was possible with everyone's support that women won more than men. Now we have taken it as a message that we must grow together,' she said.

Newly elected central member Badi, who is also the Minister for Women, Children and Senior Citizens, received the highest number of votes at 1,751. Kathayat, who is also a former MP, received 1,500 votes, and Lhajom received 1,135 votes. Shahi received 798 votes.

Five women have won the central member seat from Bagmati Province. Prabha Dhakal, Vidushi Rana, Akanksha Pokharel, Anita Shrestha and Parbati Thapa were elected central members from Bagmati.

Advocate Binita Bogati said that the election of many women central members from Karnali is a positive aspect at a time when there is a perception that women should not enter politics. ‘This is a sign of change,’ she said, ‘it is a good thing for women to come to the central level of a party.’

49 women have been elected to the 99-member Central Working Committee elected at the first National General Convention of the Nepali Congress. With this, the representation of women in the party's new Central Committee has reached 49.49 percent.

According to the final results released by the Central Election Commission on Friday morning, 99 Central Working Committee members have been elected through open, inclusive and regional quotas in all seven provinces. Of these, 49 are women.
