The National Independent Party (NISP) President Ravi Lamichhane has made efforts to get the party's office bearers to agree but failed, so the election is almost certain to be held today.
A leader of the NISP said that preparations are underway to hold voting from 10 am. President Lamichhane had spoken to the general secretary candidates at the general convention venue. He had urged them to go together as much as possible, saying that everyone was equal for him. However, the leader said that he had decided to go for the election since there was no consensus.
Kabindra Burlakoti, Pramod Neupane, Rajunath Pandey, Manish Jha, Jagadish Kharel, Ranju Darshana, Ganesh Karki, Ganesh Parajuli, Sagar Dhakal and Bipin Kumar Acharya have entered the fray for the post of general secretary.
Similarly, for the two open joint general secretary posts, Ramesh Prasai, Yagyamani Neupane, Sulabh Kharel, Asim Shah, Ashok Kumar Chaudhary, Milan Limbu, Pukar Bam, Rajiv Khatri, Vijay Jairu, Hari Dhakal and Himesh Panta are competing.
The efforts of leaders including President Lamichhane to reach a consensus on the general secretary post have not been successful.
After discussions with Lamichhane, some aspirants for the post have withdrawn their candidacies. General secretary candidate Shishir Khanal has withdrawn his candidacy. He has said that he has withdrawn his candidacy to prioritize consensus in party unity, institutional strengthening and leadership selection.
Biraj Bhakta Shrestha has withdrawn his candidacy for the open vice president post. Shrestha withdrew his candidacy after consulting with party president Ravi Lamichhane and another contender, Swarnim Wagle, who is also the finance minister.
Sobita Gautam and Toshima Karki have filed their candidacies for the women's vice president post. Initially, Samiksha Baskota and Indira Rana Magar, who were trying to become the vice-presidential candidates, supported Gautam.
President Lamichhane had assigned Swarnim Wagle to discuss with the aspirants to unanimously select the leadership for the post of women vice-president. Later, after Lamichhane himself spoke, Baskota and Rana withdrew from the competition.
Another aspirant for the vice-presidential post, Baskota, has also supported Gautam. She withdrew her claim after meeting top leaders. She is already the parliamentary committee chairperson and a central member of the party and had demanded more responsibility in the party in the future.
The RSVP has increased the number of office bearers to 19, which includes a chairperson, a senior leader, three vice-chairpersons (one open, one woman and one nominated), two general secretaries (one nominated), five joint general secretaries (two open, one woman, two nominated), one spokesperson (nominated) and three joint spokespersons (one woman, all nominated).
There is also a provision to nominate Treasurer 1 and Co-Treasurer 2 according to the principle of inclusion.
