Congress Vice President Bishwaprakash Sharma has said that the upcoming general convention of the National Independent Party (NIP) should make clear its policy, decisions and intentions rather than selecting a leader.
Addressing a large gathering of workers organized in Jhapa on Tuesday, Sharma said that the success of the NIP general convention will not depend on who will take the leadership but on the policy direction taken by the party. 'It is almost clear who will take the leadership, but the real success of the general convention will depend on the documents, decisions and intentions passed by the party,' he said.
Sharma expected the general convention to make clear its views, especially on issues related to nationality, democracy and good governance.
Raising the question of nationality, he said that the NIP's official view should be clear on the Prime Minister's statement on the encroachment of the Nepal-India border. 'As the Prime Minister said, if India has encroached on Nepal's land, then where it has encroached should be mentioned in the party's documents. Otherwise, the Prime Minister should be asked to withdraw his statement by going to Parliament,' he said.
Stating that the Prime Minister's opinion and the party's opinion cannot be different, Sharma commented that if the general convention remains silent on the matter, the political existence of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) itself would be questioned.
On the issue of democracy, he presented the demolition of houses during the rainy season without giving citizens an option, the behavior of MPs getting up and walking out during the President's address, the government's style of not giving enough time to Parliament, and the ordinance on the decision-making process of the Constitutional Council as examples. He said that the RSS should include its clear view on such issues in the document.
On the issue of good governance, Sharma said that the RSS should also give its opinion on whether it was appropriate to remove the old system of suspending MPs when corruption cases are registered. He also raised the question of whether the party can instruct its own leadership to clarify the source of gold and other assets seen in the assets of the Prime Minister and ministers.
