UML President KP Sharma has condemned the government for arresting party Vice President Bishnu Prasad Poudel. In a statement issued on Monday night, he condemned the government's illegal and abduction-style arrest when he was in Surkhet for the party's organizational program. The statement said, "Our party strongly condemns and condemns the illegal and abduction-style arrest of NCP (UML) Vice President Comrade Bishnu Prasad Poudel while he was in Surkhet for the party's organizational program." The CPN (UML) has always stood firmly in favor of the rule of law, good governance and the rule of law. This is another culmination of the apolitical, undemocratic and naked revenge being carried out by the current ruling party against the opposition parties. It is clear that this repressive step is a continuation of the ongoing series of attacks and political conspiracy against me and our party, the CPN (UML).'
According to him, Vice President Poudel was scheduled to return to Kathmandu on Tuesday after completing his Surkhet program on Monday. 'In defiance of the rule of law and normal legal process, the option of being questioned at any time or proceeding with the process in his presence has been deliberately abandoned. A political figure who has held public office and always respects the law has been arrested with malicious intent just for a cheap 'stunt' and cheap political consumption. Our party will firmly confront such authoritarian steps taken in the frenzy of power,' he said.
He also accused the current government of being undemocratic, totalitarian and authoritarian. "We want to warn the government - such vile and vindictive actions targeting opposition party leaders should be stopped immediately. We cordially call on all patriotic, justice-loving and democratic forces to unite to collectively protest against such arbitrary and anti-democratic actions of the government," he said.
