Former President Bidya Devi Bhandari has said that Nepal should learn from Jung Bahadur Rana to preserve its sovereign existence. At a discourse on ‘Nepali Nationalism and Shri 3 Maharaj Jung Bahadur Rana’ organized on Sunday, Bhandari said that Jung Bahadur Rana played an important role in protecting Nepal’s independent existence and sovereignty during the challenging times of colonial expansion in the 19th century. She said that Nepal was able to maintain its independent existence even when most of South Asia was under the British Empire, and she should give credit for it to Jung Bahadur Rana as the then leader. Bhandari also said that Jung Bahadur had the opportunity to visit Britain and understand the international balance of power closely. She said that the diplomatic behavior adopted thereafter made a significant contribution to organizing the relations between Nepal and the British Empire.

This is what Bhandari said about Jung Bahadur

Jung Bahadur's important aspect is related to the protection of Nepal's independent existence. The 19th century was an era of global colonial expansion. At that time, a large part of South Asia had already come under the British Empire. Even in such circumstances, Nepal was able to maintain its sovereign existence. We should give credit for this achievement to Jung Bahadur Rana as the then leadership. He visited Britain and got the opportunity to understand the international balance of power closely.

The diplomatic behavior adopted thereafter systematized the relations between Nepal and the British Empire to some extent. In this context, the Jung Pillars built during the arrangement of the Nepal-British India border are also considered noteworthy, which has contributed greatly to border clarity and administrative and diplomatic stability.

Some of Jung Bahadur's decisions have been evaluated from different perspectives in history. But we should remember that Nepal regained the Banke, Bardiya, Kailali and Kanchanpur regions, i.e. the new country, in exchange for military assistance in suppressing the Indian rebellion of 1857 as an important national achievement associated with his reign.

Today's Nepal is moving forward on the path of a federal democratic republic. Today, the concept of nationhood is also linked to the protection of geographical integrity and sovereignty, as well as the promotion of democratic values, social justice, inclusiveness, national unity, economic self-reliance and civil rights.

We must learn from the experiences of different periods of history to build a stronger, more prosperous and confident Nepal. The study of Jung Bahadur's life and work teaches us an important lesson. It is necessary to protect the interests and freedom of the nation, but at the same time, the expansion of democratic values, civil liberties and social justice is equally necessary. Maintaining a balance between the protection of nationality and the strengthening of democracy is the basis for the sustainable development and success of modern Nepal.
