Khadga Bahadur Budha, a lawmaker from the main opposition party Nepali Congress, has demanded answers from the government, asking who are the people who are pressuring and giving orders to the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority from the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers.

Speaking at the beginning of the House of Representatives meeting on Friday, lawmaker Budha said, “Who are the people who are pressuring and giving orders from the Prime Minister’s Office? They are members of a new gang that is not recognized by the Constitution and laws of Nepal and is only trying to capture the state machinery with dark glasses.”

He accused groups that are not recognized by the law and constitution of trying to exert influence in the Prime Minister’s Office and control the state machinery. Budha urged the government to clarify this by saying that people who have not received constitutional and legal recognition are trying to run the government from the Prime Minister’s Office.

Budha said, “Does the Prime Minister understand or not? The Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority is not a national vigilance center under the Prime Minister’s Office, but a constitutional body. Its job is to monitor the government when necessary and maintain checks and balances on state power. The Authority is not an institution that belongs to anyone.’

He said that since the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority is a constitutional body, it should not be subjected to any kind of pressure or influence. ‘If the Prime Minister’s Office is intimidating the Authority and making it make a decision, who will investigate the wrongdoings of the government tomorrow?’ He asked. He expressed serious concern over the increasing influence of groups outside the constitution and institutions in a democratic republic.

MP Budha said that democracy is not run by individuals or invisible forces but by the constitution and institutions, and the increasing influence of informal power centers in state bodies is not a good sign for both the country and democracy.
