Home Minister Sudhan Gurung has said that the budget allocated for the Home Ministry is inadequate. In a meeting of the State Affairs and Good Governance Committee held at Singha Durbar on Thursday, Home Minister Gurung stressed the need to increase the budget for effective performance. Home Minister Gurung mentioned that the ministry lacks resources to work on serious issues such as good governance, disaster management and drug control. Minister Gurung said that although he has worked hard to bring an additional Rs 20 billion above the budget ceiling, it is still not enough. Speaking in the context of disaster management, Minister Gurung said that the procurement of rescue equipment is delayed due to the cumbersome provisions of the Public Procurement Act. He urged the lawmakers to support the amendment of the act, saying that completing the 45-day process for purchasing heavy-duty drones would end the monsoon. Learning from past disasters, the ministry now plans to adopt restrictive methods and conduct its own monitoring, he said.

‘The ministry lacks budget. We have been sent on a challenging task, but the resources are very limited. If the honorable members of parliament raise their voices for an increase in the budget of the Ministry of Home Affairs, our agencies will be able to work more effectively,’ he said.

Saying that the methods adopted so far to control drug trafficking have not been effective, he pointed out the need to bring a new reform plan. He informed that preparations are being made to close the source by conducting a ‘joint operation’ in coordination with the Indian Security Force (SSB) to control drug trafficking, especially through border checkpoints.
