The CPN (UML) has condemned and condemned the views expressed by Prime Minister Balendra Shah in Parliament regarding the Nepal-India border, saying that it is against the national interest.
A press release issued by UML General Secretary Shankar Pokharel on Monday stated that Prime Minister Shah's statement was irresponsible and that it has weakened Nepal's established stance, diplomatic claims presented in the international forum and national unity.
The statement said, 'The irresponsible statement made by the Prime Minister from the rostrum of Parliament on such a sensitive national issue has seriously weakened the country's established stance, Nepal's diplomatic claims in the bilateral international forum and national unity.'
The UML recalled that the new map of Nepal, which includes Limpiyadhura, Lipulekh and Kalapani, was issued in 2077 BS on the basis of historical facts, evidence, measurements and treaties and agreements, and stated that the map has been unanimously approved by Parliament and included in the schedule of the constitution.
The party has claimed that the Sugauli Treaty, historical maps, hydrology and government records confirm that the actual source of the Kali River is Limpiyadhura, and said that the border dispute should be resolved on the basis of historical facts, evidence and diplomatic dialogue.
UML has also urged Prime Minister Shah to apologize to the Parliament and the Nepali people for his statement. The statement said, 'Prime Minister Shah immediately apologizes to the Parliament and the Nepali people for his statement that was against the national interest, and our party strongly demands that diplomatic decency be observed and the way be paved for the protection of national self-respect.'
UML has also emphasized that the government should present itself in a clear, factual and responsible manner on issues related to national interest, sovereignty and geographical integrity.
