The Rastriya Prajatantra Party, which has five seats in the House of Representatives, is on the verge of a split again. The long-standing conflict between Chairman Rajendra Lingden and General Secretary Dhaval Shamsher Rana has led to a split in the party.
General Secretary Rana said on Sunday that he would leave the RPP and build a 'nationalist' force. He urged nationalists inside and outside the party to participate in the new campaign.
He told Ikantipur that he would start the campaign from Jestha 21. 'I have started a campaign to build a nationalist force. We will make further announcements on Jestha 21,' he said, 'We have tried to take the Rastriya Prajatantra Party forward in line with public sentiment for the past four years. However, the RPP was punished by the people for walking the wrong path amid contradictions and ideological dilemmas. Friends affiliated with the RPP feel this path is right, I wish them well, there is no animosity.'
He said that he has decided to chart the future path with the goodwill of building a credible nationalist force in the country, in accordance with the opinions and advice of well-wishers, fellow warriors and fellow travelers. 'We have received suggestions and wishes from Nepalis living in the country and abroad to move forward in line with the times and public sentiment,' he said, 'I cordially invite all nationalist friends who love the country and want the country's prosperity, including the new generation, to participate in the new campaign.'
RPP spokesperson Mohan Shrestha said that General Secretary Rana's desire to create a rift in the party for a long time is about to be fulfilled. 'General Secretary Rana had been trying to create a rift within the party for a long time. Now he is on the way to fulfilling that desire,' he said, 'But efforts to unite the RPP will continue.
There has been a conflict within the RPP for four years between Chairman Lingden and the General Secretary Rana faction. The establishment party has been accusing Rana of being in favor of an active king, standing against the party's policy of moving towards a constitutional monarchy, and trying to weaken the organization. The Rana party, on the other hand, has said that it has been fighting against the chairman for arbitrarily using the 'stick' of action against leaders and cadres who hold different opinions.
A gathering held in Kathmandu under the leadership of General Secretary Rana in Chaitra last year had demanded the announcement of the date of the general convention within a week. The gathering had written a 3-point letter to Chairman Lingden, demanding that the date be set for the general convention in Jestha. However, the establishment party has said that the general convention has not been called.
The demand submitted to Lingden has also demanded the formation of a general convention organizing committee under the coordination of an impartial person to hold the central convention in a balanced and credible environment, the announcement of the date of the central convention within a week, and an investigation into the activities that were previously against the constitution.
The RPP had postponed the general convention by six months citing the election on 21 Falgun. In 2082, there was a scuffle between the youth of the establishment and General Secretary Rana's faction at the Kathmandu district conference of the RPP's youth organization. Chairman Lingden was the chief guest at the conference held at a party palace in Dhumbarahi. But before the conference was inaugurated, there was a scuffle between Chairman Lingden and the General Secretary Rana group.
Before that, in 2081 Asoj, the dispute had started after Chairman Lingden removed General Secretary Rana from the position of head of the organization department. The conflict had started after Rana's responsibility was taken away and given to senior leader Buddhiman Tamang. On 25 Falgun, 2081, the conflict between Lingden and Rana came to the surface over the issue of going to the airport to welcome former King Gyanendra, who was returning from Pokhara. Disputes within the RPP began to grow after former King Gyanendra, ignoring Lingden, promoted Rana, leader Nawaraj Subedi, senior vice president Rabindra Mishra, and medical professional Durga Prasai.
When there was growing dissatisfaction with mainstream political parties and the government, the royalist parties/powers became active in the movement to restore the monarchy last spring. However, the violent protests in the Tinkune area on Chaitra 15 scattered the royalist powers.
Lingden was unhappy when RPP leader Subedi was appointed as the coordinator of the people's movement to restore the monarchy. Lingden was irritated when he was placed at number 10 in the people's movement committee announced on Chaitra 4.
The RPP has split six times in its 35-year journey. For the first time, on Jestha 15, 2047, the party split into RPP (Chanda) and RPP (Thapa) due to a leadership dispute. The second time, in 2053 BS, the party was again divided into two factions due to a power struggle between Surya Bahadur Thapa and Lokendra Bahadur Chand. The third time, in 2062 BS, Kamal Thapa separated and formed the RPP Nepal. Thapa rejoined the RPP before the Falgun 21 elections.
The fourth time, in 2063/64 BS, Prakash Chandra Lohani and Kamal Thapa separated from Pashupati Shumsher Rana and formed the Rastriya Janshakti Party.
In Chaitra, 2073 BS, Prakash Chandra Lohani formed the Unified Rastriya Prajatantra Party (Nationalist), and in continuation of that, Pashupati Shumsher Rana established the RPP (Democratic) in Shrawan, 2074 BS. This is the fifth division.
The sixth time, on 25 Mangsir, 2078 BS, after being defeated for the post of chairman, Kamal Thapa left the RPP and revived the RPP Nepal.
