Nepali Congress MP Geeta Gurung has demanded a formal apology from the state for the suffering suffered by women due to structural discrimination and abuses in the past.
She said in the House of Representatives meeting on Tuesday that women should also apologize.
MP Gurung presented the fact that women have faced discrimination, violence and deprivation for generations in Nepali history. She mentioned that women have always remained second-class citizens due to evil practices such as sati, witchcraft, and chhaupadi, and discrimination in citizenship and property rights.
She expressed gratitude for those initiatives, noting that in 2016, BP Koirala appointed Dwarika Devi Thakurani as the first woman minister in South Asia and that the Ministry of Women and the National Women's Commission were established during the tenure of former Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba.
MP Gurung expressed concern that women's issues have not been adequately addressed in the current government's policies and programs.
'If an apology to the Dalit community is the beginning of justice, then an apology to women is the introduction of civilization. The state should now formally and publicly apologize to women. This apology should not be limited to words alone but should include ensuring their meaningful representation, economic self-respect and self-reliance,' said MP Gurung.
