The opposition party CPN (UML) has demanded an immediate reversal of the government's decision to provide relief of Rs 15,000 per household to homeless squatters for the months of Jestha, Ashar and Shrawan.
Speaking at the House of Representatives meeting held on Wednesday, party MP Guru Prasad Baral demanded that the government increase the amount as the amount is not even enough to sustain their lives. He also objected to the government's decision to provide relief of Rs 25,000 per household for temporary accommodation.
'Just yesterday, the Nepal government made a serious and erroneous decision. The government has evicted squatters from their places of residence without any preparation and without providing them with reliable accommodation,' Baral said, 'And the government says, you will get Rs 15,000/15,000 for these three months of Jestha, Ashar and Shrawan.' That is, a family of 5 members gets 3 thousand in other words, how can a family survive on 100 rupees a month and 100 rupees a day in the vicinity of Kathmandu, Speaker.'
'This is a huge inhuman attack on the squatters. On the other hand, the government is saying - I will give a lump sum of 25 thousand for temporary residence. Speaker, the temporary residence was where they were living. Now the government needs to make new arrangements for permanent residence, and now it has taken them out of their temporary residence. They are living in a very inhumane manner in holding centers,' he added.
