UML has decided to continue the party membership of former President Bidya Bhandari. Deputy General Secretary Lekhraj Bhatta informed that the central secretariat meeting held at President KP Sharma Oli's residence, Gundu, decided to renew Bhandari's membership on Monday.
'An important decision has been made today. It has been decided to grant membership to former President Bidya Bhandari,' he said.
The central committee meeting held on July 5 and 6 last year had kept Bhandari's membership 'pending'. After that, a dispute arose in UML.
On July 8, Bhandari held a press conference and expressed dissatisfaction saying that she could not take away her membership as she had already renewed it. A year before that, Bhandari had gone to the central office in Chyasal and renewed her membership, but the central committee had not recognized it.
The Central Committee on July 5 and 6 last year concluded that former President Bhandari should not enter active politics. The decision to return to party politics was against the spirit of the constitution, as the role of the President is highly respected, dignified and of historical importance and is completely free from party affiliation.
