Representatives of the Gen-G movement have rejected the invitation sent by the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers for a discussion on constitutional amendment. They have announced that they will not participate in the discussion until the prior agreement with the government is implemented.
On Friday, 25 activists issued a joint statement, saying that while they agree with the idea that Nepal's constitution should be amended in a timely manner, the state must show responsibility for past movements and agreements.
The activists have objected, saying that the implementation status of the 10-point agreement reached with the government on November 24, 2005 is still unclear.
The activists have demanded that the government form a high-level advisory commission to amend the constitution instead of a 'standing' system. They propose that the commission should include independent experts, youth and movement stakeholders.
They have suggested that the amendment process should be carried out only after extensive debate and consultation at the local, provincial and federal levels. 'We are ready to make suggestions to the government, but a transparent and inclusive process must be ensured for that. There is no point in holding a dialogue until the November 24 agreement is implemented in full and the cases against the protesters are withdrawn,' the statement said.
The joint statement was signed by Amrita Van, Amit Khanal 'Urj', Arnab Chaudhary, Arun Singh Nepali, Ayush Baryal, Uparjun Chamling, Kamal Magar, Tanuja Pandey, Prabhat Love, Prajwal Vikram Rana, Pema Wangmo Lama, Majid Ansari, Monika Chaudhary, Monika Niraula, Yatish Ojha, Yadav Aryal, Raksha Bam, Rijan Rana Magar, Ruksana Kapali, Laxmi Ghimire, Biflvi Neupane, Sarisma Thapa, Sanken Rai and Sudeep Seth, among others.
