NCP coordinator and former Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal has urged the government not to adopt the style of violating the law, ruling through ordinances, circumventing parliament and carrying out vindictive arrests in the name of numbers. He has accused the government of attacking trade unions, press freedom and democratic institutions.

Addressing the House of Representatives on Tuesday, Dahal urged the government not to attack trade unions. ‘Trade unions are the main soul of modern democracy. Let us not move in the direction of taking away rights gained through a long struggle. We should not destroy democratic institutions, but build them,’ he said.

‘Yesterday we protested against the situation of being imprisoned for speaking, but today we are practicing regulating and weakening the media. Democracy develops only by answering questions, not by running away from questions,’ he said, ‘There should be no violation of the law in the name of numbers. How can this be acceptable to the democratic system and method?’
