Prime Minister Balendra Shah has called a meeting of the Constitutional Council. According to the Prime Minister's Secretariat, the meeting has been called for 5 pm on Thursday.

This is the first time Shah has called a meeting of the Constitutional Council since he was appointed Prime Minister on Chaitra 13.

Before that, the government had brought an ordinance regarding the Constitutional Council. According to which, in a meeting where the chairperson and five members are present, the decision of the chairperson and at least three members will be considered. Similarly, if only the chairperson and four members are present in the meeting, the decision of at least three members, including the chairperson and at least two members, will be considered the decision of the council.* If there is a division of votes among three members in the council meeting, the decision of the Prime Minister will be considered the majority.

According to the Prime Minister's Office, the meeting will decide on issues such as appointing the Chief Justice. After the retirement of Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Prakash Man Singh Raut, the Supreme Court is without leadership.

The senior-most judge Sapna Pradhan Malla is currently holding the position of Acting Chief Justice.

Similarly, since there are vacancies in constitutional bodies including the Election Commission, new appointments will be made from the meeting.

The council, chaired by the Prime Minister, includes the Speaker, Chief Justice, National Assembly Speaker, Deputy Speaker and Leader of the Opposition.

Earlier, it was mentioned in the news that only 3 members of the Constitutional Council can make decisions if 6 members are present
