Congress President Gagan Kumar Thapa has instructed the party's lawmakers to appear in Parliament to correct the ordinance brought by the government that is against the constitution and the law.
Speaking at the party parliamentary party meeting held at Singha Durbar on Wednesday, he gave the directive. President Thapa said that he had asked the lawmakers to appear in the meeting to correct the provisions that are against the constitution and the law since the ordinance brought by the government will be brought to Parliament as a replacement bill.
He also objected to the government going beyond the limits of the constitution, stating that he felt it was wrong. President Thapa also said that the Congress will play its role in preventing the government from going the wrong way.
'The Nepali Congress will not obstruct the positive work that the government does within the limits of the constitution. We have also informed the party parliamentary party of this decision. It is also our job to play the role of the opposition within the boundaries of the constitution. Where questions need to be asked, the Congress asks questions, and where warnings need to be issued, it does so. Where alternatives need to be suggested, we will do that too,' he said.
'There is a constitutional provision for bringing ordinances. We brought them yesterday. There will be a situation where we need to bring them tomorrow too. But if the issue is related to what, why was it brought? With what intention was it brought, we always have to look at it,' he said, 'Dozens of ordinances have been brought now. The President has already made ordinances. Every ordinance that will now come to Parliament. When it comes as a replacement bill tomorrow, which issues are constitutional, which issues are not constitutional? Who has taken away civil rights, which are right, which are not right? It is your job to examine it in the light of that, raise questions and put pressure for corrections as needed. We have said that you should play this role.'
Chairman Thapa also said that the government should not entertain the illusion that it alone can make laws just because it has a majority.
