Bhishma Raj Angdembe has been elected unopposed as the leader of the Nepali Congress parliamentary party. The meeting of the Nepali Congress parliamentary party on Monday selected Angdembe as the party leader.
Earlier, the party's Central Working Committee meeting unanimously proposed Angdembe's name for the parliamentary party leader, said spokesperson Devraj Chalise.
Earlier, the names of Mohan Acharya and Arjun Narsingh KC were also in the news, but in the end, consensus was reached on Angdembe's name.
The Nepali Congress was unable to select the party leader due to the claims made by KC, Angdembe and Mohan Acharya. Angdembe is also supported by former President Sher Bahadur Deuba and leader Shekhar Koirala's faction. Vice President Bishwaprakash Sharma had also shown active efforts to unanimously select him as the party leader. Apart from Sharma, another Vice President Pushpa Bhusal, General Secretaries Poudel and Gururaj Ghimire were unanimously engaged in discussions to select the leader of the parliamentary party.
Who is Angdembe?
Born in 2020 in Falgunanda Rural Municipality-1 (formerly Navamidanda) of Panchthar, Angdembe stood in favor of multi-party politics in the 2036 BS referendum. He remained active in various movements thereafter. He has held various positions in the Nepal Students' Union, Tarun Dal and Congress and has fulfilled his responsibilities.
Similarly, he established himself as a front-line youth leader by playing an active role in the 2046 BS people's movement. The same movement restored multi-party democracy in the country, in which Angdembe's participation was notable. He was even arrested during the movement.
From 2046 to 2052 BS, he was elected as the central member of the Nepali Sangh for two terms, playing an important role in building the organization, mobilizing cadres, and expanding democratic values. During this period, he succeeded in developing leadership and capacity and creating a distinct identity in the party.
Angdembe became the central vice-president of Nepal Tarun Dal in 2054 BS. This responsibility established him as an influential leader of the young generation within the Congress. He again joined the street struggle by participating in the historic people's movement against the monarchy in 2062/063 BS. He was arrested during that time as well.
He was elected as a member of the Constituent Assembly from Panchthar Constituency No. 2 in the second Constituent Assembly election of 2070 BS. That was his first entry into parliamentary politics. Before that, he was a candidate from Panchthar-2 for the House of Representatives in 2056 BS and was defeated by UML's Dambar Singh Samwahamphe.
After being elected as a member of the Constituent Assembly, he assumed a leadership role on economic policy, trade management, and consumer rights as the chairman of the Industry, Commerce, and Consumer Rights Committee under the Constituent Assembly.
