The Nepali Congress is going to select the parliamentary party leader unanimously. General Secretary Pradeep Poudel said that the party leader will be selected on Monday. A meeting of the Central Working Committee has been called for that at 11 am.
Party vice-presidents Bishwaprakash Sharma, Pushpa Bhusal, general secretaries Poudel and Gururaj Ghimire are engaged in the effort to build consensus. They had discussions with President Gagan Thapa and other top leaders and aspirants throughout the day.
Arjun Narsingh KC, Bhishmaraj Angdembe and Mohan Acharya were in the news as the main contenders for the parliamentary party leader. KC and Angdembe are both elected MPs from the constituency, while Acharya is an MP elected from Rasuwa. Acharya is also a construction businessman.
KC has withdrawn from the competition after Chairman Gagan Thapa did not want him. KC is Thapa's father-in-law. Thapa has prioritized directly elected candidates, saying that making KC the party leader would raise political questions about him. Vice Chairman Sharma said that he has been putting forward the name of Angdembe, keeping the broad unity within the party at the center.
KC has told the party officials who are active in building consensus that he is no longer in the competition for the party leader. Even though he withdrew, he has proposed that Basna Thapa, an elected MP from Dailekh-2, be made the party leader from among the youth.
KC said that he put forward Thapa's name because the party officials seemed to be populist. "When the leadership and office bearers started to look more popular than practical, realistic, and result-oriented, I suggested that Basana Thapa be made the party leader, as she is a young woman, directly elected, and from a remote area," KC said. "Yogesh Gauchan Thakali, who has won the election twice from among the youth, is another option. Otherwise, someone from Madhesh can be made." KC said that it would not be generally acceptable if no criteria were set and consensus was established. Chairman Thapa has said that the leader should be selected by consensus. "He has been seen to be absolute in deciding who to make the party leader. However, he is of the opinion that consensus should be established at all costs," said an office bearer.
