Congress leader Shyam Ghimire has suggested that it would be better for leaders who are over 60 to retire from politics.
At a meeting of the other groups called by then acting president Purnabadur Khadka on Sunday, Ghimire pointed to the leaders on the stage and said that if they do not support unity, it would be better for them to retire from politics.
‘In the current situation, we have only three options. Open a party, merge and retire,’ he said, pointing to then acting president Khadka, former office bearers Prakashman Singh, Krishna Prasad Sitaula and Bimalendra Nidhi on the stage, ‘We should not go for the first option. We should not talk about dividing the party. There is no option to go together. If you cannot merge, you have crossed 60, you can also leave politics and remain silent.’
Ghimire said that most of the leaders in the meeting agreed with his line. ‘There are very few who speak loudly, everyone’s emphasis is on going together,’ Ghimire said after the meeting, ‘Chairman Gaganji has said that he will take everyone along.’ My main emphasis was that we should believe his words and work for unity.’
In the meeting, some leaders including Kalyan Gurung, Govinda Bahadur Shah, Kundan Kafle, and others expressed the view that there was no environment to join the current central working committee and that alternatives should be considered. The sequence of speeches in the meeting continues.
