The Supreme Court has recognized Gagan Thapa's faction as the official Congress party.

A bench of Justices Sharanga Subedi and Nripadhwaj Niraula on Friday dismissed the writ filed by Sher Bahadur Deuba's faction and delivered the verdict. With this verdict, the dispute over the legitimacy of the Congress party that has been going on for 3 months has been legally concluded.

Gagan Thapa was elected as the president at the special general convention held in the last week of Poush last year. Against this, the Election Commission granted legitimacy to Thapa's faction on the petition of the then president Sher Bahadur Deuba's faction, and the Deuba faction moved the Supreme Court on 4 Magh 2082. Last month, the Thapa faction had made the agenda of the party's regular 15th general convention public. After that, the Deuba faction filed another petition in the Supreme Court, seeking an order not to implement the agenda.

After the term of the working committee elected by the 14th general convention of the Nepali Congress ended last November, there was a dispute in the party over whether to hold the general convention election before or after. As the dispute escalated, the Thapa faction held a special general convention.

In the elections held on 21 Falgun, the candidates of the Nepali Congress contested the candidacy under the proportional system under the signature of the then president Deuba and the direct election under the signature of Thapa. After Thapa resigned after suffering a heavy defeat in the election, the central working committee rejected it. Since then, Thapa has been leading the party, while the Deuba faction is starting parallel activities.

After Purna Bahadur Khadka, who was given the responsibility of the acting president at the time by Deuba, continued to issue press releases in the same capacity using the party's letterpad, the party's disciplinary committee had given him 7 days to explain on Wednesday. Khadka, however, said that he would not provide an explanation, calling the decision ridiculous.
