Former General Secretary of the Nepali Congress, Shashank Koirala, has said that the clarification sought from then acting President Purna Bahadur Khadka will hinder the broader unity within the party. He mentioned that such a decision could negatively affect the life of the party and the entire democratic process while the case is pending in the court.
In a statement issued on Thursday, Koirala said that the Nepali Congress is currently going through a historically weak stage and that internal disputes have increased the risk of affecting not only the party but also the entire democracy and system. He stressed that unity from the grassroots to the top leadership is indispensable at such a sensitive time. The Central Disciplinary Committee of the Nepali Congress has decided to ask Khadka for a seven-day explanation on Wednesday.
Koirala said that while differences within the party are natural, the way in which they are managed is important. He indicated that although the party has felt the need for timely transformation during the past movements and changes, the current activities threaten to further weaken the Nepali Congress.
Reminding that the dispute regarding the official status of the Congress is pending in court, Koirala said that the clarification asked of Khadka in such a situation will not contribute positively to party unity. He said that the party life may be pushed towards further crisis due to internal activities and disciplinary measures.
He said that the changes being made in the name of membership update at a time when active membership has been renewed in preparation for the 15th General Convention will affect the internal democracy, impartiality and transparency within the party.
Koirala has appealed to the general workers to maintain a sense of unity, claiming that the Congress is not yet divided ideologically and structurally. He has called on leaders and workers at all levels to unite the party and protect democratic values and norms.
