The Nepali Congress has concluded that the role of the main opposition party in parliament will be made effective.
The Central Working Committee meeting held on Thursday concluded that both cooperation and monitoring with the government will be carried out in a balanced manner. The party has stated that it will not compromise on democratic values and will play its role in parliament on that basis. The party has expressed its belief that the values of freedom, equality, respect and coexistence established through the struggle and movement of the Nepali people from 2007 to 2082 can be institutionalized within the democratic system.
The Nepali Congress believes that it will advance the agenda of policy, institutional and structural reforms in accordance with its election manifesto, while adhering to the values of democracy, republic, federalism, citizen supremacy, pluralism, separation of powers, independent judiciary, freedom of expression and press, rule of law and human rights mentioned in the constitution.
The Nepali Congress has indicated that it will present itself as a responsible opposition, not just a force that opposes for the sake of opposition. The party has put forward good governance, transparency, accountability, freedom of expression and strong parliamentary culture as the five main pillars of its political practice. On this basis, the Congress has adopted a policy of constructive debate in parliament, effective monitoring and clear intervention in matters of public interest.
The Congress has presented a clear and balanced view of its relationship with the government. It has stated that it will support and cooperate with the government in its lawful and public interest work and is ready to move forward on issues of common national concern on the basis of consensus. However, the Congress has warned that it will strongly oppose any step that weakens or narrows the rule of law, civil rights and democratic values.
The party has warned the government not to take such actions and has also indicated that it will create pressure from within and outside the parliament if necessary. Expressing its belief that parliamentary democracy can be strengthened only through tolerance, dialogue and respectful behavior, the Congress has linked political competition with cooperation and responsibility.
