Nepali drivers and transport entrepreneurs are in trouble due to vehicles with Indian number plates on the Nepal-India border, said MP Nisha Dangi of the ruling National Independent Party.
In a meeting of the House of Representatives on Wednesday, MP Dangi said that vehicles that enter Nepal from India should be regulated by issuing a one-day customs pass and operating in Nepal for a long time. MP Dangi said that the lack of necessary regulation of vehicles that enter Nepal for a long time has resulted in losses in customs duties and problems in compensation in case of accidents.
MP Dangi said that the government should take the initiative to stop the misuse of Indian vehicles. 'The arrangement that has been made for vehicles with Indian number plates to enter Nepal is currently being misused.' According to the rules, vehicles that enter with a 1-day customs 'day pass' should be returned, but in practice, those vehicles are being operated privately and publicly within Nepal,' said MP Dangi. 'This is directly affecting vehicles with Nepali number plates that are being operated after paying high customs duties.'
MP Dangi, elected from Jhapa-1, said that the area is also affected by such a problem. At the same time, she claimed that such problems have been seen in the border areas of Nepal and India. 'Nepali transport entrepreneurs are being pressured due to Indian vehicles in every border area. Nepali drivers and businessmen are in trouble, she said. "If an Indian vehicle causes an accident in Nepal, it is equally difficult to get compensation."
To solve the problem of vehicles with Indian number plates entering Nepal on 'day passes' through customs and staying here for a long time, MP Dangi has made three suggestions - strict monitoring should be carried out at the border, misuse of 'day passes' should be stopped immediately, and Nepali transport entrepreneurs should be protected in the border area.
