The UML establishment party has summoned leaders who are conducting a signature campaign demanding a special general convention and instructed them to stop the campaign. Working President Ram Bahadur Thapa, Vice President Bishnu Poudel and General Secretary Shankar Pokharel summoned Intellectuals Council President Gajendra Thapaliya, Youth Association Deputy General Secretary Upendra Shahi and ANNFSU Deputy General Secretary Kamal Joshi to the central office in Chyasal on Tuesday for discussions. The campaigning leaders have replied that they will automatically stop if the leadership is ready for the special general convention.

'There is no disagreement on reforming the party. But stop the signature campaign now,' was the request of three UML office-bearers. But the leaders conducting the signature campaign argued that they had started the signature campaign because a special general convention was necessary for party reconstruction. 'If the decision to go to a special general convention is made by the Central Secretariat or the Central Committee, the signature campaign will automatically stop,' said the leader conducting the campaign.

In a signature campaign addressed to Chairman KP Sharma Oli, a special general convention has been demanded, saying that the parliamentary politics has brought the weakest election results since 2048 BS to 2082 BS.

It is mentioned that getting only 9 (5.45 percent) votes out of 165 seats in the direct election and 13.43 (percent) votes in the proportional representation has shown the people's distrust in the current committee system and leadership of the UML.

The special convention has been demanded, saying that all issues must be resolved through the special general convention as per Article 73 (a) of the UML Statute, 2049 BS (with amendments of the Second Legislative General Convention 2082 and the 11th National General Convention 2082). 'We, the representatives of the 11th National General Convention, sign for the protection and interests of the communist movement and the UML and demand a special general convention through the Central Committee as soon as possible,' the letter prepared informally states.

After the party was reduced to a small size in the elections, the leaders who have stood in favor of party reorganization include Vice President Bishnu Poudel, Deputy Secretary General Yogesh Bhattarai, former Vice President Surendra Pandey, leaders Karna Thapa, Anand Pokharel, and others.
