The selection of the leader of the UML parliamentary party has been blocked after the arrest of Chairman KP Sharma Oli.

The police took the then Prime Minister Oli into custody last Saturday for investigation after the Commission of Inquiry found him responsible for the human losses caused by the Gen-G movement on 23 Bhadra. He is currently undergoing treatment at the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital, Maharajgunj under police surveillance.

Before his arrest, Oli was preparing to make UML Vice-Chairman Ram Bahadur Thapa the leader of the parliamentary party. However, since he is in police custody, the process has been blocked.

UML Publicity Department Coordinator Min Bahadur Shahi said that an important decision will be made after Chairman Oli is released. 'Important decisions, including the selection of the party leader, will be made after the chairman is released,' he said.

Even though Oli is in custody, the leaders are meeting and talking to each other at the teaching hospital. UML General Secretary Shankar Pokharel met Oli on Monday and discussed the street protests. A secretariat meeting was held on Tuesday as per Oli's instructions. The secretariat meeting discussed the streets, parliament and legal fight against Oli's arrest.

A leader said that he had instructed to intensify the street protests from custody. UML has been in a street protest and legal struggle since Oli's arrest. Oli is holding daily street protests demanding his release, while a case of habeas corpus has been filed in the Supreme Court.

The National Independent Party, Nepali Communist Party, and National Independent Party have already elected party leaders. The Congress and UML have not elected party leaders.

Although the leadership was elected at the UML's general convention held in the third week of Bhadra, the responsibilities of the leaders have not been distributed. It had prepared to distribute the responsibilities of the central members. After Oli's arrest, those preparations have also been stopped.
