The newly elected members of the House of Representatives are taking the oath of office and secrecy on Thursday. The time for taking the oath is set for 2 pm. This time, the House of Representatives, which will be represented by six political parties, has 182 members from the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). There are 38 members from the Congress, 25 from the UML, 17 from the NCP, 7 from the Shram Sanskriti Party (SSP), and 5 from the RPP. There is one independent member.
The lawmakers will be sworn in by 78-year-old Arjun Narsingh KC, the senior member of the House of Representatives. KC, a proportional representation member of the Congress, was sworn in by the President on Wednesday.
The senior member will conduct the meeting until the Speaker of the House of Representatives is elected. There is a constitutional provision that the election of the Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives must be completed within 15 days of the first meeting of the first session of the newly elected House of Representatives.
The next government will decide when to convene the session of the House of Representatives. According to Ekram Giri, Joint Secretary and Spokesperson of the Federal Parliament Secretariat, 61 lawmakers will take the oath in their mother tongue.
He informed that the oath-taking ceremony will be held in the new parliament building under construction inside Singha Durbar, as the parliament building in New Baneshwor was vandalized and damaged during the protest on Bhadra 24. Temporary arrangements have been made for holding the meeting of the House of Representatives in a hall of the parliament building under construction.
‘Since the construction of the assembly hall of the House of Representatives has not been completed, we have been preparing for a month to hold meetings and administer the oath of office in the multi-purpose hall. The seats have been arranged. The rostrum, the Speaker, the General Secretary, and the secretariat have also been arranged. Some work remains, although the physical infrastructure work has been completed, the technical side remains to be done,’ Giri said, adding, ‘The work of security management has been completed.’
