The legacy of former Maoist Deputy General Secretary Janardan Sharma in Rukum West has been shattered. He, who had been winning continuously since 2006 after the Maoists entered the peace process, has suffered defeat this time.

After a disagreement with NCP coordinator Pushpa Kamal Dahal, he left the Maoist Party in Kartik and became a candidate for the Progressive Democratic Party. To protect his legacy, he also aligned with the UML. But he was defeated by Gopal Sharma, a cadre he had promoted while remaining in the Maoist party.

It was Janardan who promoted Gopal in politics in Rukum. Janardan had a hand in making Gopal a provincial MP in the 2074 elections and then the Finance Minister of Karnali province. At that time, Janardan was powerful in the Maoist party.

When the internal conflict between Maoist chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal and Janardan intensified, Gopal supported Janardan. When he was preparing to leave the party, Gopal suggested that he stay within the party and fight. But Janardan did not agree. Janardan and Gopal were competing as candidates in the House of Representatives elections held after the Gen-G movement dissolved the parliament.

Janardan lost his legacy after abandoning the 'Maoist legacy'

The former guru-chela was in the running to win the election. After Janardan left the Maoist 'legacy', he aligned with the UML. But his attempt to win the election was not successful. If he had not left the NCP, there was a strong possibility of winning the election by a large margin. The main reason is that he left the 'Maoist legacy' that mainly lost the election.

NCP's Gopal Sharma won by getting 21,609 votes. In the clash between Janardan and Gopal, Congress's Raju KC rose to second place. He got 16,661 votes. Janardan finished third by getting 14,346 votes.

In the 2079 election, Janardan got 39,549 votes. He defeated UML's Nandaram Devkota by a margin of 26,588 votes. At that time, Devkota got 12,961 votes. At that time, there was an alliance between the Congress and the Maoists.

With Janardan's defeat, not only the legacy he had been holding on to, but also the Maoist legacy is breaking down.

After entering mainstream Maoist politics, he became the Minister of Finance, Home, Energy and Peace. Janardan was the commander of the 'Jana Sena' during the Maoist's 10-year armed war. After joining the Progressive Democratic Party, he was accused of abandoning the communist name. He was also heavily criticized in his home district.

Dahal and Janardan met in Rukum in 2042 BS. Dahal was the 'Supreme' commander of the 10-year Maoist armed war, while Sharma was one of the four 'Deputy Commanders'. 2 He closely supported party chief Dahal in the work of integrating combatants, the peace process and drafting the constitution in the Nepali Army. He had the status of reaching Dahal's 'bedroom' and giving suggestions and advice. Dahal also trusted him and gave him important responsibilities. He had to be defeated by his former colleagues because he left the Maoist party.

Sharma was also a witness to the UML-Maoist electoral alliance in 2074 and the subsequent party unity. The seeds of distrust between Dahal and Sharma had been planted since the eighth general convention held in Poush, 2078.

After Deputy General Secretary Sharma challenged Dahal's leadership and submitted a 14-page long written dissenting opinion at the Standing Committee meeting held in Shrawan, 2081,  the relationship between the two leaders deteriorated. In Kartik, 2082, when differences between Dahal and Sharma reached their peak, the relationship was severed. The latest election results have further distanced Dahal and Sharma.
