Coincidence of winning MPs from Surkhet: Same toll, both transport entrepreneurs

Both of them are participating in the parliamentary elections for the first time. Their houses are about 200 meters apart, and both of them are leading different transportation companies. A year and a half ago, both of them were in the same party, that too in the same faction.

In the House of Representatives elections held on Thursday, Nepali Congress's Bishnu Bahadur Khadka won from Surkhet-1 with 26,897 votes and Rastriya Swatantra Party's Ramesh Kumar Sapkota won from Surkhet-2 with 30,842 votes. Both of them have a lot of coincidences.

Both are residents of the same village Birendranagar Municipality-7 Itram. Their houses are only about 200 meters away. Both have a background in transport entrepreneurs. Both lead different organizations. Khadka is the president of Madhya Paschim Yatayat Yadi Samiti Pvt. Ltd. and Sapkota is the president of Kankrebihar Yatayat Pvt. Ltd.

Both were in the same party a year and a half ago. Currently, Khadka is the vice president of Congress Surkhet, while Sapkota is the district president of Rashtriya Swatantra Party. Sapkota was the secretary of Congress' Birendranagar Municipal Committee before joining Rashtriya Swatantra Party. At that time, both of them were close to former Congress acting president Purna Bahadur Khadka. Bishnu Bahadur is Purna Bahadur's younger brother. Both have completed their studies up to SLC.

Sapkota, who entered the transport business as a co-driver in 2055 BS, is also a cooperative activist and is active in various social services through the Rotary Club in Surkhet. 46-year-old Sapkota also played an active role in breaking the transport sector syndicate in the former Midwest. With Sapkota winning the election, he became the first people's representative of the Nepali Congress from Karnali Province. Earlier, he started his parliamentary journey by breaking the Congress-UML stronghold.

Bishnu Bahadur's brother Purna Bahadur won the election from Surkhet-1 in 2048 BS and became an MP six times. Khadka, who became a member of parliament, preserving his brother's long legacy, started politics in 2036 BS by standing in favor of multi-party politics. 'At that time, I led the marches, graffiti, and pamphlets in favor of multi-party politics in Birendranagar,' he said. 'I also led the people's movement in 2046 BS. During that time, I had to spend 11 days in detention for the first time and 26 days in detention for the second time.'

In the 10th general convention of the Nepali Congress, he was elected as the ward president of the former Birendranagar Municipality-8 and also won a representative in the 14th general convention.
