Sasmit Pokharel of the National Independent Party has won the Kathmandu-5 election. According to the final results, he has received 30,737 votes. Pradeep Poudel of the Nepali Congress has received 9,159 votes.
In this election, Nisha Adhikari, a federal committee member of the Dynamic Democratic Party and head of the women's department, has secured ninth place with 91 votes. It is noteworthy that Adhikari was the only candidate to contest in Kathmandu from the Dynamic Democratic Party, founded by Buddha Air operator Birendra Bahadur Basnet.
In a public statement after the results, Adhikari expressed her gratitude to all the voters of Kathmandu-5 and said that elections in a democracy are not just a competition of winning and losing, but also an exercise in ideas, agendas and trust.
She expressed her gratitude to all those who supported the election campaign, gave suggestions and criticized it and inspired it to be better. She also congratulated the victorious Pokharel and wished him a successful term. She expressed her confidence that Pokharel would use the responsibility given to him by the people for the benefit of the region and the country.
Adhikari said that her commitment has not changed regardless of the election results, and that efforts to build politics based on door-to-door dialogue with the citizens and policy-agenda will continue.
She said that there is a possibility that the strong opposition within the House of Representatives will be weakened, and that in such a situation, the role of a strong democratic opposition on the streets will be even more important to protect the voice of the citizens.
Adhikari also said that the election results should not discourage women from leadership. ‘The dream of one day reaching the parliament as a female representative from Kathmandu-5 is still alive,’ she said via Facebook. ‘I will continue to try to fulfill that dream and work to bring more women forward in politics.’
She said that politics is not a journey of gaining office for her, but a journey of service, values, and responsibility, and that her political journey will continue.
