The 'supreme' commander of the ten-year armed war was Pushpa Kamal Dahal, the then Maoist chairman and current NCP coordinator. The base area of the armed war was Rukum and Rolpa. Rukum, Rolpa and Kalikot, which the Maoists have been winning since the 2064 elections, have protected the NCP.

Most of the 164 candidates fielded by the NCP have lost, but Dahal remained safe without any risk. Dahal, who became a candidate through Rolpa, Kathmandu, Siraha, Chitwan, and Gorkha, won the election easily from Rukum East. In the 2079 election, he won the election from Gorkha 2. The NCP has won Rukum, Kalikot, and Rolpa before.

After winning the election, he claimed to play the role of a guardian, saying that he was the only former Prime Minister who won the election.  But NCP co-coordinator Madhav Kumar Nepal has been defeated from Rautahat 1. Similarly, leaders Narayan Kaji Shrestha from Sarlahi 3 and Bhim Rawal from Achham 1 have also been defeated.

Maoist fighter division commander Mahendra Bahadur Shahi has won from Kalikot. He had also won in the 2079 House of Representatives election.

As of Saturday evening, NCP candidates Barshaman Pun from Rolpa, Dhan Bahadur Budha from Dolpa, Yubaraj Dulal from Sindhupalchowk 2, Ramesh Kumar Malla from Salyan and Gopal Sharma from Rukum West are leading.

Barshaman Pun, who is also the former finance minister, is leading by a large margin. He is almost certain to win from Rolpa. He was the deputy commander of the Maoist fighters.

Gopal Sharma from Rukum West and Ramesh Kumar Malla from Salyan are also leading.

Leader Barshaman Pun says that the old parties have suffered defeat due to popular slogans rather than political ideas and principles.

‘The wave came from one side. We could not bring the wave. We won in areas where we have a strong base. A wind of populism blew,’ he said.
