Balendra Shah (Balen) of the National Independent Party has won with a large margin from Jhapa Constituency No. 5, which has become the 'epicenter' of the House of Representatives elections.
There was a lot of interest in Jhapa-5 because the Rashtriya Swatantra Party had declared Shah as the prime ministerial candidate. Shah, the former mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City, was in an election competition with CPN-UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli. Shah is a senior leader of the Rashtriya Swatantra Party.
He defeated Oli by 49,614 votes. According to the Election Commission, Shah got 68,348 votes while Oli got 18,734 votes.
