The Supreme Court has set a general date for the writ petition filed against the dissolution of the House of Representatives. The Supreme Court has set a general date for the writ petition for February 22. The House of Representatives elections are being held on February 21. According to advocate Premraj Silwal, the matter has not been heard immediately, saying that the merits of the case have not been fully considered.
The Constitutional Bench of the Supreme Court had heard 16 writ petitions against the dissolution of Parliament on 12 Kartik and ordered to submit written responses within seven days, excluding travel time. After that, the outgoing MPs of UML and Congress filed different writ petitions. The Supreme Court had sought written responses while hearing those writ petitions.
Although written responses were submitted by the respondents in all the writ petitions, the Supreme Court has stated that only a general date has been given as the files are yet to come in some matters. So far, only a preliminary hearing has been held on these writ petitions. It has not been decided when the further hearing will be held. If the elections are held on the scheduled date, the justification for these writ petitions will be lost.
The House of Representatives was dissolved on 27 Bhadra based on the recommendation of the Sushila Karki-led government formed on the strength of the Gen-G movement. A writ petition was filed in the Supreme Court claiming that the dissolution of the House of Representatives and the appointment of former Chief Justice Karki as the Prime Minister were unconstitutional.
Meanwhile, volunteers have been mobilized in wards across the country to inform the general public about the importance of voting rights and the voting process. Targeting the upcoming House of Representatives, one voter education volunteer has been deployed in each of the 6,743 wards of 753 municipalities. They will provide voter education until 17 Falgun.
The volunteers are reaching the settlements and doorsteps of voters and informing voters about the importance of elections and the voting process through sample ballots, informed the Election Commission's Assistant Spokesperson Sita Pun Shree.
According to her, for the purpose of the voter education program, the contact person previously designated by the Commission at the local level was assigned as the monitor of the election voter education program and was given orientation. The Voter Education Unit under the Election Information Communication and Coordination Center has placed 345 materials on the Commission's official Facebook page, X, TikTok and YouTube to provide election education.
Broadcasting of interactive video messages, song messages, short videos and jingles has also been started on the official digital platform. The Commission is confident that such content, targeted at voters, political parties, candidates and stakeholders, will enhance the integrity of the election and help citizens receive official and reliable information and reduce the impact of false and misleading information.
‘By promoting voter education programs through digital platforms, citizens and stakeholders receive official information,’ said Assistant Spokesperson Shree. ‘Such content will motivate voters to participate in the election, increase election integrity and follow the election code of conduct. It is also expected that the voting percentage will increase and the percentage of invalid votes will decrease.’
To make the publicity and voter education of the upcoming election more effective, the Commission has discussed collaboration with national artists, social media content creators and influencers. Accepting the Commission's request to support the grand celebration of the election being held under special circumstances, the participating artists have committed to spreading messages on digital platforms to promote voter education and election integrity and reduce misinformation to the general electorate.
