In the last election, UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli held public meetings across the country to present himself as the central figure and attract voters. Oli, who has been Prime Minister four times, is focusing on his own constituency, Jhapa-5, this time.

KP Sharma Oli, who is supposed to attend the nationwide election meeting as the party president, has focused on his own constituency, Jhapa-5. Although he has been winning consistently since 2070, he has not been able to visit other districts this time.
In the past elections, UML Chairman KP Oli had addressed public meetings in various parts of the country. He had presented himself as a central figure and worked to attract voters across the country. Oli, who has been Prime Minister four times, is focusing on his own constituency
Jhapa-5 this time. Balendra Shah resigned from the post of Mayor of Kathmandu and is competing with Oli in Jhapa-5. After that, Oli has focused on his own constituency. He has rarely had the opportunity to go to other districts to ask for votes from his comrades. Oli is currently on a door-to-door campaign. He is listening to their complaints. He is trying to attract voters. Rather than leading a nationwide campaign, he is busy formulating an election strategy in his own constituency. While Oli is busy in his own constituency, other UML candidates seem worried. On Saturday, the party's Jhapa-5 election committee issued a 35-point appeal. In it, the reasons why Oli should be elected were explained. It claims that the country needs Oli to protect sovereignty, strengthen democracy and end foreign interference. On Tuesday, Oli made his Jhapa-5 manifesto public. Oli has been elected as the party's president continuously since the ninth general convention in 2071. As a popular leader in the country, he used to participate in election campaigns nationwide in the past. Balendra Shah, who filed his candidacy for the parliamentary elections from Jhapa-5 on behalf of the National Independent Party, has traveled from east to west. The party has promoted him as the future Prime Minister. While his competitor and UML's promotion of Oli as the future Prime Minister, is largely limited to Jhapa. Byjana Sharma, who teaches English at Damak Multiple Campus, said Oli's challenges are increasing as the election approaches. 'In the previous elections, Oli would hardly come here,' she said. 'This time, the focus on the constituency shows that he is under pressure.'
In the past two elections, UML had an alliance with the Rastriya Prajatantra Party in this constituency. However, this time, it is contesting the election without an alliance. This has added to Oli's challenge. UML leaders have expressed confidence that Oli will win despite the tough competition. They said that Oli will now travel to other constituencies as the election campaign officially started only on Monday. ‘He is going to Kathmandu on Wednesday to unveil the party’s manifesto the next day,’ said Koshi Chief Minister and party leader Hikmat Karki. ‘After that, he will go to other constituencies.’ Karki said that Oli will have a strong advantage in the election due to his long political experience, organizational network and influence within the party. Supporters say that the infrastructure projects and policy decisions built during Oli’s tenure will win him the support of voters. ‘He will win by a large margin.’ The party has not felt pressure in Oli’s constituency,’ said Karki.
Political science professor and analyst Krishna Pokharel is not ready to accept this argument. He said that Oli is under pressure. ‘Oli’s image as someone who opposes the spirit of the Gen-G movement has been tarnished.’ He is competing with Balen, who is considered the unofficial leader of this rebellion,' Pokharel said, 'Since there is a competition between revisionists and progressives in Jhapa-5, there is pressure on Oli to focus on his own constituency.' Local voters also say that Oli is under pressure. Party workers are deployed in large numbers in Jhapa-5. While Oli himself is participating in small gatherings, listening to voters' complaints and explaining to voters about past development initiatives related to his leadership. All these activities point to a tough competition.
Opposition candidates, especially Shah, have been organizing door-to-door campaigns and small community interactions instead of relying solely on large public rallies. He has intensified grassroots campaigning.
The political environment after the Gen-G protests and the growing influence of social media
have put pressure on established leaders including Oli, analysts say. The trend of voters showing new faces towards new political parties in this election has also added to Oli's concerns.
Political analyst Mumaram Khanal said that Oli's strategy of focusing on constituencies indicates that all is not well. 'His image is deteriorating after the Gen-G protests.' Looking at this, I don't think it will have a positive impact even if he goes to other constituencies and supports candidates. On the other hand, I don't think he himself is confident that he will defeat Shah in Jhapa-5.'
The Gen-G movement took place in September when Oli was the Prime Minister of the UML-Congress coalition. 77 people lost their lives in this movement.
