Nepali Congress President Gagan Kumar Thapa has unveiled a roadmap to make Nepal a digital hub within the next five years.
In a video message on Monday morning, he expressed his belief that even small improvements in the field of information technology can bring big results. He said, "If we are determined to do it, we can really do it within five years in the field of technology. About four trillion rupees worth of IT services can be exported abroad within five years. More than two hundred thousand direct jobs can be created." Thapa is a candidate for the upcoming House of Representatives elections from Sarlahi-4. Some time ago, his statement that one can earn 3-4 lakhs per month by using a laptop became the subject of trolls in a meeting in Kirtipur, but he clarified that it was not a whim but a planned idea. Giving an example of how even small reforms made through ordinances during the previous government showed positive results, he pointed out that there is now a need for more systematic and policy-based reforms.
Thapa has claimed that IT services worth about Rs 400 billion can be exported within five years, aiming to promote the period from 2024 to 2034 as the 'IT decade'. His plan includes creating more than 200,000 direct jobs, expanding at least 200 Nepali IT companies to the global market, and listing 3 to 5 companies on the stock market.
He said, 'Creating more than 200,000 direct jobs, expanding at least 200 Nepali IT companies to the global market, and listing 3 to 5 companies on the stock market.'
For this, he has put forward a stable tax policy, the creation of a 'talent hub' for producing skilled manpower in information technology, and a public-private partnership model. He says that now Nepal should not be limited to freelancing and BPO but should focus on manufacturing and exporting its own digital products. He stressed that the government should also prioritize the use of indigenous technology and products.
Chairman Thapa said, 'It is necessary to stabilize the tax base in the ICT sector and remove some legal obstacles. This can lead to extensive improvements in the ICT sector within a few years.'
