Nepali Congress Vice President Bishwaprakash Sharma has urged voters to use discretion in the upcoming elections like in 2070, reminding them that the country did not find a way out when decisions were made on impulse like in 2064 BS.
Stating that the country is currently in a state of ‘a storm in the Fewa Lake’, he claimed that only the Congress, like an experienced sailor (Majhi), can steer the boat.
Inaugurating the election program of the Congress Lamjung in Besisahar, Lamjung on Monday, Sharma commented that the public vote given to the Maoists in 2064 BS was the result of impulse. ‘In 64 BS, people voted based on emotions, as a result, the constitution was not formed, four years were wasted, billions of rupees were spent,’ he said, ‘but in 70 BS, common sense was brought to bear, the Congress became the first party and the constitution was formed in two years.’
Stating that the constitution was possible under the leadership of the Congress after 2070 BS, he recalled the role of the then President Sushil Koirala. ‘The leaders are the same, the parties are the same. The constitution was formed when the leadership was restrained and like Bhishma Pita,’ he said. He mentioned that top leaders including Pushpa Kamal Dahal, KP Sharma Oli and Madhav Kumar Nepal collaborated in the constitution-making process.
Sharma also gave credit for the peace process to the Congress and claimed that the Congress created an environment where the Maoists, who were in violence, were brought into peaceful politics and kept their guns in the cantonment. ‘The Congress coordinated the right to life,’ he said.
He asked the voters not to give in to impulse, anger, fear or hesitation, ‘Will the country repeat the mistakes of 1964 or will it bring the conscience of 1970?’
He compared the current situation of the country to the storm in Fewa Lake. ‘Even a novice can sail a boat in calm waters, but an experienced sailor is needed in a storm,’ he said, ‘Now the country is in a storm, only a knowledgeable sailor can sail the boat across at this time.’
He emphasized that the Congress should be given leadership again, presenting examples of the political changes, peace process and constitution-making of 2007, 2015 and 2046 BS. ‘The Nepali Congress can sail the boat. Now the decision is in the hands of the people,’ he said.
