What you should know

In the 2079 elections, he lost in 16 constituencies by a margin of less than 1,000 votes. At that time, the main competition across the country was between the two-pronged alliance of the Congress and the UML. The Congress-led alliance included the then Maoist Center, the Unified Socialist Party, and the Democratic Socialist Party.

The UML-led alliance included the JSP Nepal and the RPP. In most of these, there was intense competition between the Congress and the UML.

Thus, by a narrow margin, the Congress defeated the UML, and the UML defeated the Congress in four constituencies each. Similarly, the UML defeated the RPP, the JSP Nepal defeated the RPP, the Congress defeated the RPP, the Civil Liberation Party defeated the Maoists, and the Unified Socialist Party defeated the UML in one constituency each. The UML defeated the Maoists and the UML defeated the Maoists in two constituencies each.

These are the 20 constituencies that lost by less than 1,100 votes in the last election.

Analyst Keshav Dahal says that the calculations of that time do not match the results of this election. According to him, after the party made a decision in the 2079 election, at least 50/60 percent of the voters would have sided with the party. However, he understands that this time, not only the voters but also the cadres have reached a point where they do not accept the party's decision. 'The calculations of the previous elections do not seem to match this time. The issue at that time was political, this time it is about face. This is sad. "The entire election debate is now focused on Jhapa-5," says Dahal. "The UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli, who is in a position to know all the voters, is not sure what will happen, he is suspicious. The situation in other places is also similar."

In the previous election, Panchthar was won by the smallest margin. UML's Basanta Kumar Nemwang defeated Congress' Bhishma Raj Angdembe by the smallest margin of 96 votes. Now, both the Congress and UML have changed candidates in this region. UML has fielded Aindra Sundar Nemwang and the Congress has fielded Narendra Kumar Kerung.

The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh did not have much influence in this region. UML also came first in the proportional representation, Congress came second, and the Maoists came third. The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh had received only 1,948 votes in the proportional representation in this region.

In Sunsari-4, Congress's Gyanendra Bahadur Karki defeated UML's Jagadish Prasad Kusiat by a margin of just 112 votes. This time too, there is a fierce competition between these two candidates. Although there is a slight difference in direct votes between Congress and UML, there is a difference of 7,500 in proportional votes.

In Dhanusha-4, UML's Raghubir Mahaseth defeated the then Central Working Committee Joint General Secretary of Congress, Mahendra Rai Yadav, by a margin of just 124 votes. Even now, Mahaseth is the candidate from UML and Yadav is the candidate from Congress. The third party in this region was JSP Nepal.

Then in Kathmandu-1, Congress's Prakash Man Singh defeated RPP's Rabindra Mishra by a margin of just 125 votes. Singh, who has been in continuous election competition since 2048, has taken a break in his parliamentary journey this time. The working committee led by Gagan Thapa, who was elected from the special general convention, has kept Singh out and nominated young leader Prabal Thapa as the candidate this time. Mishra is the candidate from the RPP. While the Congress came first in the proportional vote, the RPP came second and the RPP came third.

From Bardiya's constituency no. 2, Lalbir Chaudhary of the Civil Liberation Party defeated the Maoist's Suresh Pantha by a margin of 136 votes. Chaudhary is Resham's father. At that time, he was an independent candidate. In the proportional vote, the Congress was second, the Maoist third and the UML fourth. Only then did the RPP have votes. In this constituency, the Congress has fielded the then party's joint general secretary Kishore Singh Rathore. The Maoists have fielded Pantha. The RPP has fielded Shridhar Pokharel.

From Parsa-3, UML's Rajkumar Gupta defeated Congress's Surendra Chaudhary by only 167 votes. This time, the UML has given a ticket to Rupesh Pandey in place of the previously elected Gupta. The Congress has fielded Chaudhary.

Maoist leader Rekha Sharma came into the limelight by defeating UML General Secretary Shankar Pokharel by a narrow margin in Dang-2. Sharma defeated Pokharel by a mere 193 votes. UML has still fielded Pokharel as its candidate, while the (then Maoist) NCP has fielded Nirmal Acharya as its candidate in Sharma's place. Although Sharma won directly, the Maoist was in fourth place in proportional votes. UML is in first place, Congress is in second place, and RSP is in third place.

UML's Yogesh Bhattarai defeated Maoist's Khel Prasad Budha Chhetri by a margin of 208 votes in Taplejung. UML has not fielded Bhattarai as its candidate this time. UML has fielded Kshitij Thebe as its candidate in Bhattarai's place. Budha Chhetri has been fielded by NCP again.
