Four candidates from two out of three constituencies in the district who have been ministers repeatedly are now seen as active in wooing voters. With the new party candidates in the district adopting a different campaign style, those who have been elected ministers repeatedly face the challenge of preserving their reputation this time.
Four former ministers are in the election race from two constituencies in the district. Three of them have become candidates from old parties. One is reaching the doorsteps as a candidate from a new party. This time, there is no wave of party entry among voters like before. Instead, the three former ministers in the race have changed parties and become candidates. Despite the increasing dissatisfaction with the party change, the election atmosphere is becoming competitive. Due to which there is more excitement in the villages than in the cities.
Surendra Raj Acharya and Brijesh Kumar Gupta, who have become federal ministers in Kapilvastu-2, are competing to preserve their legacy. Acharya has become a candidate from the Congress and Gupta from the Nepali Communist Party. The competition between these two has made the election interesting. Both have been the main competitors since 2074. Gupta, who contested the election from the UML's Surya symbol in 2074, won by getting 35,147 votes. Acharya, his closest rival, got 31,566 votes.
Acharya defeated Gupta by a margin of 317 votes in the 2079 parliamentary election. Acharya got 39,14 votes while Gupta got 38,697 votes. Gupta, who started politics from the RPP in 2056, has been elected to the Constituent Assembly twice and the House of Representatives twice. Gupta became a Minister of State in the Council of Ministers formed in 2061 under the chairmanship of the then King Gyanendra Shah. Then, when Dr. Baburam Bhattarai was the Prime Minister, he served as the Minister of Law and Justice from 2068 Kartik to 2069 Baisakh.
Gupta has joined the RPP through Tamalopa and UML and now the Nepali Communist Party. Acharya, who was elected to the Constituent Assembly in 2070, became the Minister of State for Irrigation in the cabinet of the then Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal in 2073. Acharya became the Minister of Women, Children and Senior Citizens for the second time in the Dahal-led government on April 24, 2007. He was the minister until Asad, 2008. Gupta is in the running for the fifth time, while Acharya is looking for a third victory.
Acharya, 67, of Buddhabhumi-3, Rangai, is competing with Gupta, 55, of Bagardawa, Kapilvastu-2. Since the district headquarters Taulihawa is included, there is a lot of interest in the elections in this area.
Similarly, there is a competition to please voters between two candidates who have been federal ministers of state in Kapilvastu-3. Birendra Kumar Kanodia and Ishwar Dayal Mishra, who became ministers after a gap of 10 years, are in the race. Kanodia, who became the Minister of State for Water Resources in the Sher Bahadur Deuba-led government in 2058, and Dr. Mishra, who became the Minister of State for Physical Planning and Construction in the Baburam Bhattarai-led government, is in a fight. In 2064, there was a competition for the Constituent Assembly member from the then Kapilvastu-4. They are facing each other for the second time. Mishra had won in 2064. Both of them have now changed parties and become candidates.
Mishra, who became a Constituent Assembly member from Tamalopa, was previously elected as the VDC chairman from the Congress in the 2049 local elections. He contested the election as a member of the House of Representatives from the Janata Pragatisheel Party with the UML's sun symbol in 2070 and from the Janata Pragatisheel Party in 2074. This time, he is contesting the elections from the Rashtriya Mukti Party (Chakia) led by Rajendra Mahato.
Kanodia, who was elected as the then District Development Vice-Chairman, Constituent Assembly member and Lumbini Provincial Assembly member from the Congress, is now a candidate from the UML. He joined the UML just two days before the candidacy was registered on Magh 6. There is an interesting competition between 59-year-old Mishra of Maharajgunj-7, Gagauda and 66-year-old Kanodia of Krishnanagar-2, Krishnanagar Bazaar.
