The current president of the Nepali Congress is Gagan Thapa.
The special general convention held on 27-30 Poush had elected a 134-member working committee under Thapa's leadership. However, the old establishment faction did not participate in the special general convention.
The outgoing president Sher Bahadur Deuba faction had expelled the Thapa faction from the party. However, the Election Commission recognized the Thapa faction.
After the commission's decision, Thapa himself distributed tickets in the elections. However, Deuba has not yet been able to accept Gagan as the party president.
He has not even deleted the status of president on the social media accounts he runs, Facebook and 'X'.
On the occasion of Sonam Lhosar on Magh 5, Deuba had extended his best wishes in his capacity as president.
In fact, Deuba has 'challenged' the Election Commission's decision to recognize Thapa as the Congress president in court.
The then acting president Purna Bahadur Khadka had filed a case in the Supreme Court on his behalf on 4th Magh. In that, the court has not issued an interim order and has asked the opposition to submit a written response within 15 days.
Deuba is showing his close leaders and well-wishers the case pending in the court, reassuring them that the confusion within the Congress will soon be resolved.
A story has been published in today's Kantipur daily about Deuba's state of mind after having to step down as the president of the Nepali Congress. To read the detailed click here.
