Parties including UML, Congress, Nepali Communist Party, National Independent Party, National Democratic Party are in the election fray here.
What you should know
In Baitadi, where 11 candidates are contesting the election, some are focused on preserving the legacy, while others are determined to destroy it.
Here, UML, Congress, Nepali Communist Party, National Independent Party, National Prajatantra Party and other parties are in the election fray.
UML leader Damodar Bhandari, who was elected as a member of the House of Representatives with 33,611 votes in the last election, is contesting for the fourth time. Bhandari had won the second Constituent Assembly election of 2070 BS, 2074 BS and 2079 BS to the House of Representatives. He has been the Minister of State for Finance once and the Minister of Industry, Commerce and Supplies three times.
He was also the Minister of Industry, Commerce and Supplies during the Gen-G movement of Bhada 23. 'I have filed my candidacy again with clear policies to fulfill the demands, issues, development and prosperity goals of Baitadi,' he said, 'Some of the tasks given by the people are still to be fulfilled.' He wants to maintain his legacy, while other candidates are engaged in the election campaign to destroy his legacy.
All the new faces are competing with Bhandari in Baitadi. The Congress has nominated Chatur Bahadur Chand, the president of the Nepal Cricket Association (CAN) and the president of the Congress Baitadi, for the House of Representatives.
This is the first time that Chand and Bhandari are competing in an election. Chand, who led the CAN for two terms, resigned from his teaching job and entered politics. Chand, who started politics from the Nepali Sangh in 2047, became the president of the Baitadi Congress after becoming the president of the Teachers' Association Baitadi. 'I have given my candidacy for the overall development of the district,' said Chand, 'I will not make many promises, I will show it by working.' Chand claims that he will make the entire district successful through politics, just like the success he brought to Nepali cricket by leading the CAN. This time, Chand is aiming to restore the old reputation of the Congress.
Similarly, the Nepal Communist Party (NCP) has fielded former district president Parmananda Bhatta for the first time. He came from the then Unified Socialist Party. Bhatta is the founder of UML Baitadi. When he was under the leadership of UML, the current UML candidate Damodar Bhandari was in student politics. In the current election, Bhatta is competing to break Bhandari's legacy. Bhatta claims that he has filed his candidacy for the development of Baitadi as a whole and to maintain good governance in the district.
The Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSWP) has fielded Harimohan Bhandari, who abandoned the Congress and was defeated twice in the provincial assembly, as its candidate. Bhandari argues that he has filed his candidacy as a new force for the overall development of the district with a new vision. 11 people from the Rastriya Prajatantra Party, including former Prime Minister Lokendra Bahadur Chand's son Bhupen Chand, have filed their candidacies in Baitadi.
But since there is not much organization from other parties, the competition will be between the candidates of the four main parties, said civic leader Bira Bhatta. He said that the leader should give as much assurance as he can.
