The Nepali Congress has fielded a female candidate in Dailekh-1 of Karnali Province. 45-year-old Basana Thapa is the only female candidate from the Congress in the province.

This is also her first fight with an experienced electoral politician. She is competing with UML's Rabindra Raj Sharma and NCP's Ammar Bahadur Thapa. Sharma and Thapa have experience in contesting elections. Basana is going to be tested this time.

Sharma and Thapa are candidates who have already become candidates in the elections for the House of Representatives and provincial members. Thapa of the Congress is a candidate for the first time. The UML and NCP candidates have a house in the same ward. Both have experience of winning elections as candidates before.

Along with being a general convention representative, Thapa of the Congress is also an active person in the social sector. 'My candidacy is for generational transfer, candidates of other parties are tested,' she said, 'Voters are fed up with the same person taking office again and again.' She said that she is the candidate of choice of the young generation.

UML candidate Sharma has been contesting parliamentary elections since 2048. He was defeated twice by Congress's Ganesh Bahadur Khadka. Sharma was elected as the mayor of Narayan Municipality in the 2054 local elections. He won the 2074 House of Representatives election from the same constituency. Thapa, a candidate of the NCP, was also elected as a member of the second Constituent Assembly in 2070. Thapa, who was elected as a member of the Karnali Provincial Assembly in 2074, is contesting again as a member of the House of Representatives this time.

Thapa, who chose the Madhav Kumar Nepal-led NCP (Unified Socialist) after the party split, was the common candidate of the Left-Democratic Alliance in the 2079 elections. He defeated Sharma of the UML by a margin of 852 votes in that election. Thapa and Sharma are confident of their victory.  NCP candidate Thapa had previously held the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Urban Development during his tenure as a member of the Provincial Assembly in 2074.

UML leader Nandakishore Basnet has become a candidate from the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) this time after not getting a ticket. Therefore, Sharma has the challenge of competing with his former colleague this time. NCP candidate Thapa says that people will vote for those who work in the villages rather than those who are new or old. ‘In the village, people are looking for people who will support them in happiness and sorrow,’ he said, ‘the slogans of new and old people are just slogans.’

UML’s Sharma says that since the people will vote, he should not talk about victory or defeat right now. ‘The people will vote, it is not in our hands,’ he said, ‘We will work hard, it is in the hands of the people to win or lose.’ He said that he was happy to contest the election separately from the alliance.

In the proportional representation of the House of Representatives in 2079, the UML got 16,316 votes, while the Congress got 15,837 votes. The Maoists got 2,645 votes and the Unified Socialists got 3,167 votes. Similarly, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) got 887 votes. There are 97,711 voters in the 6 local levels of this region.
