Nepali Congress Karnali Province President Lalit Jung Shahi has been elected as a member of the National Assembly. Shahi, who has a permanent residence in Chandannath Municipality-5, was defeated from Jumla 1 (1) in the 2079 BS Provincial Assembly member election. Despite the alliance between the then CPN-Maoist Center and the Congress, he had to face defeat from his own rebel candidate Devendra Bahadur Shahi.
Some had commented that the alliance with the Maoists did not benefit Shahi. But this time, he won the National Assembly election by aligning with the UML.
Now, he became a candidate in the National Assembly election in alliance with the UML. First, his victory was assured because there would be a small number of voters and only cadres guided by the leaders would vote. Now, some have commented that Shahi's journey to the National Assembly was successful because of his cleverness in entering the election field after analyzing the situation correctly.
He is also known as a leader who has betrayed the Congress many times. He seems to have flourished in politics since he joined the Deuba faction from the Ramchandra faction.
In 2051 BS, he filed a rebel candidacy against the official candidate of the Congress, Lal Hamal. Congressmen say that he lost the election he won after taking the election symbol of a swan and going against the Congress candidate. In the 2056 BS election, he also rebelled against the Congress candidate Dinbandhu Shrestha. In that election too, his election symbol was the goose. Dinbandhu Shrestha had to lose by a small margin. He was known as the goose that would defeat the Congress. But now he has won as a candidate for the National Assembly.
Although Shahi betrayed the Congress twice by becoming a rebel candidate, he also got the opportunity to become the winner twice by becoming the official candidate of the Congress.
He also won the Constituent Assembly member election in the 2070 BS election. He defeated the then CPN-UML's Padam Bahadur Rokaya and the Maoist Center's Gajendra Bahadur Mahat. A Congress leader said, 'He betrayed the party twice. He even got the opportunity to win both times by becoming the official candidate.'
In accordance with the central policy, the Congress and the UML had formed an alliance in Karnali. Meena Singh Rakhal was nominated from UML and Lalit Jung Shahi from other groups from Congress. Jumla Congress Vice President Karma Budha said that the spirit of the Jumla Congress has been awakened with Shahi's victory as a member of the National Assembly.
Shahi is the first leader in the history of the Nepali Congress to win the first Constituent Assembly election from Jumla. Shahi, who believes in work rather than propaganda in politics, considered the energy sector as the main basis for the long-term development of Jumla while he was in the Constituent Assembly. The arrangement to produce five megawatts of electricity in Jumla in the budget for the fiscal years 2071 and 2072 was made on his initiative. After the delay in the implementation of the plan, he reached the Supreme Court and fought a legal battle. From which the government was issued a mandate to produce electricity.
According to him, the lack of electricity development in Jumla means the door to industry, employment and prosperity is closed. Even after becoming a member of the National Assembly, he believes that the energy sector will remain his priority. "I did not come to politics for positions and allowances, but to complete unfinished work and fulfill the commitments made to the people of Jumla," said Shahi.
Under Shahi's initiative, infrastructure projects such as the Jumla-Rara road section, Urthu bridge, Chhinasangu bridge, and Kudari bridge to Tamti have been taken forward. Shahi, who has a clear and balanced view on coalition politics, said that it is the common responsibility of all parties to make the coalition institutionally successful.
Shahi, who believes in experience, continuity, and institutional politics, has also expressed his commitment to establish Karnali's issues at the national level as a member of the National Assembly.
