Nepali Congress Karnali Province President Lalit Jung Shahi and UML's Mina Singh Rakhal have won the National Assembly member election from Karnali Province. Shahi won with 3,278 votes and Rakhal with 3,145 votes.
According to the Returning Officer's Office, Shahi won from the other cluster and Rakhal from the women's cluster. In Karnali, there was an alliance between the Nepali Congress and the UML for the National Assembly, while the Nepali Communist Party (NCP) contested the election alone.
The Congress-UML alliance emerged victorious in the voting held on Sunday. Buddhi Prasad Sharma and Anju Mahatara (Shahi) had registered their nominations from the NCP. Sharma received 1,639 votes and Mahatara (Shahi) received 1,734 votes.
Congress Provincial President Shahi had earlier been defeated by Congress rebel candidate Devendra Bahadur Shahi in Jumla 1 (1) in the 2070 BS Provincial Assembly election. Similarly, Rakhal from Dailekh was a member of the Karnali Provincial Assembly through proportional representation in 2074 BS. She is a central member of the UML.
191 out of 198 voters participated in the National Assembly elections in Karnali. 39 out of 40 members of the Karnali Provincial Assembly and 152 out of 158 people's representatives, including the chief, deputy chief, chairperson and vice-chairperson of 79 local levels, participated in the voting, said Lal Bahadur Gurung, head of the Provincial Election Office. According to him, 6 votes from the local level were invalid. The voter turnout in the election was 96.46 percent.
In the National Assembly elections, the vote weight of the provincial assembly member is 53 and that of the local level people's representatives is 19. Accordingly, the provincial assembly member had a vote weight of 2,120 and the local level had a vote weight of 5,122.
