Karbika Thapa of the Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP), who had filed her candidacy for the House of Representatives election in Rupandehi-2, has withdrawn her candidacy.
The Election Commission office had informed that her candidacy would be cancelled as she had not given up her permanent residence permit (PR) abroad for three months.
Following the information from the commission, Thapa issued a statement stating that according to Article 291 of the Constitution of Nepal, there is a legal provision that one can only file a candidacy after at least three months have passed since she gave up her permanent residence permit (PR) obtained while living abroad, and since that period had not been completed, she has withdrawn her candidacy. "I have taken this decision after receiving a request to withdraw my nomination from my party, the RPP, not from the Election Commission," she said. "It is my duty to act in accordance with the spirit and spirit of the Constitution." She clarified that although she had obtained a permanent residence permit abroad during her studies, she had not obtained any citizenship or passport other than Nepali citizenship and passport. Stating that her commitment to serving the country would remain intact even after withdrawing her candidacy, she expressed her commitment to continuously contribute to the fields of technology, entrepreneurship, youth and women empowerment, and good governance, whether inside or outside politics. Karbika is the daughter of RPP leader Niranjan Thapa. Rupandehi-2 Election Officer Rajendra Neupane also said that Thapa had submitted a request to withdraw her candidacy along with a letter from the party. "Karvika Thapa has withdrawn and the candidacy of Kamaladevi Gurung of the Sarvabhoom Nagarik Party has been rejected," he said, adding, "Out of the 41 candidates who filed their candidacies, 39 have been confirmed."
